Clinical Evaluation of Pipemidic Acid in Urinary Tract Infection

Abstract

|
50 cases of urinary tract infections were evaluated with daily dose of 1.0^-2.0 gm of Pipemidic acid (PPA). Mean duration of administration was 6.8 days. The patients were consisted of 26 cases of acute pyelonephritis, 10 cases of acute cystitis, 10 cases of chronic cystitis and 4 chronic pyelonephritis.
The overall efficacy rate reached up to 84%, Causative organisms were isolated in 27 cases. Among them 24 cases were eliminated after administration of PPA. Bacteriuria persisted in 3 cases. PPA was sensitive to 24 cases out of 27 case. As for side effect of PPA, gastric discomfort was observed in 3 cases and anorexia in 1. Generel derangement of hepatic, hematologic and renal function were not found. According to this result, PPA was thought to be an excellent therapeutic agent for urinary tract infections.
